The Big Knit

I know it's been coolified in recent years with 'Stitch and Bitch' books, knitting circles and apparently even some celebs admitting to knitting with their girlfriends but it still has a vaguely granny-ish image. But I don't care. I'd love to be able to knit well - indeed I've attempted it many times with varying success. I jumped at the chance to go along to a BWG organised event at The Big Knit, in Sukhumvit Soi 49.

We were finger knitting a shawl with the help of a Japanese knitting expert - I don't do shawls, but I thought my mother in law might appreciate such a gift when I visit France in a few weeks. She might be terribly proud as she has after all, put in a considerable amount of time attempting to teach me to knit...

The shop was gorgeous. A work of art with shelves and shelves of delectable scuptural yarns. There were 15 women. One expert. It was hard. I've never been very good at knitting because I can't work out the individual stitches and if you have to knit into a stitch, you've really got to know where you're going. If I drop a stitch, I tend to undo and start all over again because I don't know how to pick them up and reassemble. Anyway, it transpired that everyone was quite as dim as I am.

I never did work out what they were trying to get me to do, and my knitting certainly didn't resemble the shawl they had on show. So my mother in law will have to make do without my gift. Had she owned a chihuahua I might have been able to present her little dog with a poncho...

I knit scarfs. And scarfs. Oh and I knit great scarfs! I wish I wasn't as lazy and could be patient enough to learn how to knit something different.

I could never get the hang of 'tension' big stitches little stiches.
Wool/yarn has just got so beautiful of late...there is so much choice and texture and not a little money

I'd love to be able to knit too. I read a few crafts blogs and get such a kick out of the idea of making things...but never get around to it.

Hello Susanne, thank you.

Katw, I made a bag recently (it was easy and only involved increasing and decreasing!) and I've made scarves, but anything bigger or more complicated and I get bored too easily.

Uhdd, someone said to me today 'oh, knitting is so relaxing' and I just said 'no it's not when I knit: my shoulders hunch up, and I grind my teeth trying to do it right...' and still the tension is all wrong!

Yvonne, I guess we can't do everything eh?

Lane, thank you. I looked at the wool and thought it was beautiful, and it was quite simply a shame to spoil it by trying to knit with it!

I fancy the idea of being able to knit but even though I've attempted it (years ago) I was so useless that I gave up.

I can only get as far as scarves too, though I'm not even great at those because binding off is a bugger...I think I might need patience in large doses to ever improve.
Oh, and gorgeous yarn! I love your color and texture images, they're so striking.

I really enjoyed yesterday!! Louise and I stayed on and I think (don't quote me on this) I may have figured out what the hell we were supposed to be doing.

Great pics hon.

Ooh, what lovely pictures! My gran taught me to knit when I was 9 and I still get the urge every now and then. Last think I knitted was a jumper for Lovely Husband nearly 8 years ago...it's gone a bit bobbly now :o)

My Ma's turning into the beret-knitting queen - but they're really nice so I'm not complaining... although I do seem to have a life time's supply.

Oh look at all those lovely colours and that cuddly wool. I do wish I could knit. I did try when the thugs were little. I knitted one of them a sort of cave man singlet but my stitches are always uneven.

I have to pass on the meme. Blame my dyslexia. I've got them wrong so many times but I love reading other peoples.

Debs, that's how I keep trying... being useless. I got slightly better last time I tried.

Angie, one of the 'Doctor Who' characters of my childhood was Tom Baker - his distinctive style was that he wore a really long scarf. I knitted one for my brother! Poor brother.

Carol, yes, Julie told me you'd stayed. Next tutorial at yours then? Tee hee.

Karen, wow. I am impressed. I attempted a jumper once and got half way down the second side before losing interest and giving up.

ChrisH, ooh lovely. Perhaps you could grow some more heads? That might put more of them to good use?

Fiona, well I can understand that. One of my big problems is that I can't keep the tension the same all the way through.
