Reality check

When Daughter was small she came to me one day and said ‘Mummy, in the olden days, was the world black and white?

At the same time as thinking her mother lived ‘in the olden days,’ Daughter routinely knocked ten years off my age. Sadly, in the last few years she’s got wise to this and remembers my correct age.

Living in Bangkok, I can believe that the world might once have been black and white. Something that’s always struck me about this place is its tendency to transform into exactly that: monochrome.

Black and white is what I woke up to this morning (8am-ish). I wanted to show you this to dispel the idea that I live in some tropical bliss.

omg that's incredible. My inlaws were in Bangkok last year and they warned me against visiting - they both had respiratory problems there and as an asthmatic I'll be struggling...what do you think?

OMG, no, that's a rain storm. An hour later it was as clear as a bell.

Bangkok is polluted, but I don't think it's any different from any huge city. It's certainly not as bad as Beijing. None of us have had any problems.

My kids both had asthma in the UK, and it appears to have gone here. The hospital says the humidity is good for asthma and so is living high up (we're 25 floors up).

It's not a place for walking - maybe your inlaws pounded the pavements?

What a striking picture, J loved Bankok when he visited earlier in the year and said it was of the best bits of his trip. I've never been, but shall have to make a plan to go at some point.

Great picture. I've put one of a flooded Queen Victoria In Bkk on my blog too.

Reminds me of Zhuhai. Didn't see further than 300 yards all the time I was there - such was the humidity. All at 30°C. Hard work it was, just breathing. I didn't bother taking any photos...

I am so happy that I don't wake up to that everyday. Give me Isaan any day over the concrete and traffic.

Debs, it's a fab place to live. I love the wild weather in the rainy season. It blows in, does its bit, and then blows away again and we're all sunny.

Susie, thank you. (I've been to see your pic, it's fab)

Leigh, sometimes the humidity is tiresome, but at least it's warm.

Brunty, you're so lucky to live there. I love BK, despite not being a city person. I just have to get out of the city regularly!
